Valneva covid vaccine available as early as this week

Seventy-four thousand doses of Corona’s Valneva emergency vaccine are scheduled to arrive in Austria on Tuesday, and the vaccines will be distributed to the provinces on Thursday.

In Carinthia, the new vaccine will be administered as early as Friday. Styria will follow at the end of August, and the federal capital Vienna on September 1. Several federal states are still waiting for information from the Ministry of Health or for the possibility of ordering the vaccine through the Federal Procurement Agency.

The vaccine VLA2001 is the only whole virus vaccine candidate (“dead vaccine”) developed in Europe by the Austrian-French company Valneva. VLA2001 is the sixth vaccine approved in the EU for corona vaccination. The vaccine doses were initially expected in Upper Austria on Monday, but the truck was stuck in Germany and was now expected on Tuesday morning.

In Carinthia, it will be offered to start next Friday. Doctors will vaccinate it in private practice, and at the ÖGK vaccination center on Alter Platz in Klagenfurt, Carinthia’s health spokeswoman Beate Prettner (SPÖ) announced Monday.

Suppose the Valneva vaccine is delivered to Styria on Thursday as planned. In that case, it should be available at all 15 Styrian vaccination routes starting Tuesday, August 30, according to Gerald Lichtenegger, head of Styria Pandemic Management. Anyone who would like to have this vaccine must express this only at the vaccination roads. The established physicians and lady doctors can order the vaccine for their patients starting in the coming week.

Vaccination appointments from Thursday, August 25
In Vienna, vaccination appointments with Valneva can be booked online via impfservice.wien or via the health hotline 1450 starting Thursday, August 25. VLA2001 will be administered exclusively at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV) starting next Thursday, September 1. An appointment reservation is recommended, but immunizations are possible without an appointment daily between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. (the cut-off time is 6 p.m.).

In Burgenland, information from the Ministry of Health is still awaited as to when precisely the Valneva vaccine will be delivered to the province. As soon as this has arrived, it will also be available, it said on APA inquiry of the coordination staff Coronavirus. Doctors will then be able to order the vaccine. It is also expected to be vaccinated at vaccination centers.

According to Notruf NÖ, Valneva is to be used in Lower Austria from Saturday in vaccination centers and next week by interested doctors. It said 13,986, or just under 19 percent, of the 74,000 doses of the Corona vaccine are planned for the province.

He said that as soon as the Valneva vaccine can be ordered through stores run by the Federal Procurement Agency, Upper Austria will order the vaccine. “We expect a lead time of three days from the possible order date until Valneva can be vaccinated in the Upper Austrian vaccination streets,” the province’s crisis team said. By Monday, 62 interested people had registered on the waiting list for a shot with the dead vaccine.

This is likely because the vaccine is only licensed for the 18- to 50-year-old age group, and there is only a recommendation for the first and second vaccinations, Pusch said. “So we’re having a hard time with, say, older individuals showing interest or someone who would rather have the Valneva vaccine after two mRNA vaccinations.”

The state of Salzburg expects delivery of about 4,000 doses. “This will be sufficient. There are individual interested parties, but I believe that most are waiting for a variant vaccine.” Pusch also has a comparison ready: when the Covid vaccine from Novavax was approved, there were 1,500 registrations in Salzburg for the first vaccination days, but only 150 people came. In the meantime, however, 1,500 doses have been vaccinated.
